Description
The Allen Herschell Company created this historic carousel in 1947 for the Gwynn Oak Amusement Park in Maryland. Initially, a whites-only park, which was desegregated and opened to all on the very day Martin Luther King Jr. gave his iconic "I Have a Dream" speech in the summer of 1963. The Smithsonian purchased the carousel in 1981 to replace an earlier one on the national mall near the Arts and Industries Building in Washington, DC. Added in 1996, the pictured "sea dragon" is reportedly one of its most popular seats.
